Tourist who fell into the sea in Seixal dies

The Italian tourist who was swept away by a wave in Poça das Lesmas, in Seixal, late yesterday afternoon, ended up dying this morning at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, according to several Italian newspapers.

The death of Margherita Salvucci left the community of Colmurano in a state of shock, with the population of this town deeply distraught by the tragedy.

According to what was possible to know, the tourist was on vacation in Madeira and was swept away by a wave while taking a photo.

“It appears that the young woman was surprised by a wave while taking a selfie standing on a rock. The force of the water knocked her off her feet, she hit her head violently on the rocks and was hospitalized in a very serious condition. She died this morning in hospital,” reported the newspaper ‘IL Gazzettino’.

Still according to the same source, the woman was a much-loved psychiatrist in her city. The mayor of the town, Mirko Mari, has no words to describe the general emotion: “A tragedy that affects us all. We feel immense pain for the family.”

As DIÁRIO reported, upon seeing her in trouble, a 35-year-old man threw himself into the sea to try to save her, but the foreigner was already in cardiorespiratory arrest.

The SANAS-Madeira team carried out resuscitation maneuvers and transported her to the Seixal pier, where the Volunteer Firefighters of São Vicente and Porto Moniz and the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR) continued the maneuvers, transporting her with pulse to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital. The death of the foreigner, whose photo was shared in several newspapers, was confirmed this morning.
