Northern lights were also visible in Madeira

Images were captured yesterday morning.

The aurora borealis that have been ‘painting’ the skies of several Portuguese locations since Friday night will have been visible, albeit with less intensity, in Madeira.

The images (which you can see in the gallery) were captured at 3am on the morning of May 11th, in São Vicente.

This ‘spectacle’ is associated with a solar storm of rare intensity that is affecting the Earth, making these aurora borealis visible in unusual latitudes.

Since Friday night, the Facebook page “Meteo Trás-os-Montes” has been publishing photographs of this phenomenon, in shades of purple or pink, which appeared in the skies of Portugal. Among the various locations where photographic records emerged are Chaves and Vila Pouca de Aguiar, in the district of Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Seia and Celorico da Beira (Guarda), Condeixa (Coimbra) or Portalegre.
